Unrefined sea salt is the completely raw sea salt which is rich in magnesium and calcium compounds and is therefore grey in color and slightly bitter to taste. The unrefined sea salt is also referred to as the fleur de sel and it serves as an ideal ingredient in scrubs and skin care products due to its high mineral content.

The unrefined sea salt is known by yet another name which is sel de Guerande because it is harvested from the Atlantic coast near the village of Guerande in Brittany, France. This grey salt is harvested through the traditional methods which have been in use since the 9th century when the medieval monks of the Iron Age devised a technique of acquiring this salt without disturbing its natural composition. In order to produce unrefined sea salt, sea water is expertly channeled during high tide into a network of ponds and salt pans with the help of a number of sluices and dams. Then the sea water is left to evaporate and gradually the concentration of salt keeps on increasing till a stage is reached when the salt crystals begin to form which are then raked and collected by traditional hand tools into heaps and left to dry.
