Sea salt is made by channelling the sea water into large trays and relying on the sun, the wind and other natural elements for its evaporation. Sea salt is mostly harvested from the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

Sea salt can be prepared at home as well and since the procedure is not very difficult it can be undertaken by any individual who has a penchant for experiments. In order to make sea salt at home one must follow the following steps:

 The first step involves checking the area from which the sea water should be collected. This is due to the fact that the water which is collected should be free from pollution and impurities in order to retrieve sea salt of good quality. Therefore after checking the reports as well as the environmental conditions, one can decide on a particular location and collect at least a quart of sea water in a jar or a container.
 The sea water is then strained through a cheese cloth, which is available in grocery stores or specialty cooking stores, and poured into a pot in which it is boiled till there is very little water left in the pot.

 The intention behind boiling is to get rid of as much water as possible but at the same time one must be careful not to burn the salt and scorch the pot.
 After the pot cools down sufficiently the salt crystals are scraped into a bowl and left overnight for drying and the sea salt is ready to be used in the morning.
